  1. Cinderella Man was a great story about a boxer named James J. Braddock. It shows how he rose from the difficulties of the Great Depression and achieved success at the end. the Great Depression wasn't something to be joked about. It was a serious problem in the 1930s. Rich or poor, well or unwell, everyone lost something from it. The wealthy businessman lost their savings, the average fell even lower, the taxes increased with the decreased wages. Jim owed lots of money to lots of people. His wife also tried to send their children to somewhere safe until their condition got better, since she was afraid of their health and safety. Even his friend Joe who had a very well financial support was degraded into a bad state. Some of the highest people stayed as they were with still a big loss on their hands..
Jim had to be chosen by other businessman to be able to work somewhere and earn money. With all the working he did, he only got low wages so he still wasn't able to pay the taxes. Taking care of his family was also really hard on those days. One time he had to collect money from Joe's office to get back his children. With all this bad luck like his broken hand, he wasn't able to fight well on the ring, therefore weren't able to get much money for his family. With all this happening, I admire how he was able to rise from that situation. He never gave up because he had a family that depended on him. He tried to be as selfless as possible. He was an inspiration for other sufferers of the Great Depression.
I think one of the most important parts were when they showed us the inner struggle of his wife Mae. It gave us a great insight on the effects of Great Depression on the civilians . If it weren't for that, we couldn't sympathize with the people of that time. She was kind of a symbol for them in my opinion.
Sadly, even with the Great Depression over, there are still families like the Braddock's who have lots of difficulties. Joblessness rate is still pretty high in some of the countries, with the growing population. It might even rise higher in these next years. The migrant workers still go around, searching for a job so they can feed themselves and their families. We have a big difference between the middle class and the low class. Their children are sometimes uneducated since they need to provide the family with money. The money is often not enough, they can't buy medicines when someone is sick. The easiest illnesses that can be won against can cause deaths. The living conditions are pretty low for the lower class. People have difficulty just to survive.
Different people have different problems right now. Some group of people strive to give the best education they can to their child while others worry about keeping them alive. We students constantly worry about our carriers and future. Right now if you manage to enter a good school, we feel like we can be anything we want to. The issues we have now are intellectual as well as political. Our countries have started to lead a cat-and-dog life these days. If this continues, our children might live in a world of war as well as us.
The Great Depression might have been a tremendously harmful event to America and the world, but alas, this depression was always there. That was just a turning point, a knot from all those build-ups that appeared in the history and made a name. I think the real depression is all around us. In every face we look in, in every gaze that we're too ashamed to meet. We just try to run away from it. Great Depression is one of the historical moments that brought humanity really close to this depression and despair so much that we had no other choice but to face it. At least that's what I think.

    1. I agree you and I like your analysis about the movie. I like the idea that Jimmy's wife is a symbol. You looked it from the different perspective and love it. Also its obvious that you took notes at school. Your blog contains all of the questions very well:)

    2. Zeynep, what a thorough analysis you made here. I felt as if I was reading a journal of someone who witnessed the era. Furthermore, you bringing up the fact that the depression is still around us yet ignored by many also proves the observant person you are. thanks.

  2. Before I start, I would like to thank you for choosing a perfect movie. This movie has summarized up mostly everything happened at the great depression times. People have suffered from this economical issue. It did not matter if you were rich or poor, everyone have lost from it and had their most challenging moments in their life. In the movie Braddock has lost his everything and he almost owed to everybody. Let me tell you how he got into that situation. At first he used to be the best boxer player in U.S. he used knock-out his every single rival. He was rich and he also had a nice family. When the great depression has begun he also started to loose matches. He had to quit boxing because he was not able to win his any of matches. So that he became really poor. He was very anxious about his family and he worked in every single job that he could have done. In those hard times there was a woman who was always stays in his back and ready for help. She has never lost her hope and never let him to loose it too. One day after all those tough days his manager and his old friend came up and asked for him to box again for a one match. He did not decline it and than he won that match. He was rising to his old throne at boxing. He was undefeatable just like old times. I think he was not a legendary person just because of his amazing boxing instead his willing to help to others. He was a real big man. He has taught us a man with couarge of working can do anything and has no limits. I think the most important part of the movie was the part that he has begun to taste of the poverty so that he has understood how hard it was. Afterwards as a result of this he begun to help the people who need and share his income with them. It was just fascinating for me. Those kind of man come to world cenutary. When we come to the question do we have the same issues as well as today? The answer is we actually have it but in a way more different that it used to be. We are not that bad when we compare it but it does not mean that we do not struggle. We humans will always stuggle from the econoical issues because day by day population increases and oppurtunity for the job decreases. It is a fact that there are lot of people who does not have any job and they are in a very difficult possition. There is a only one thing that we can do, it is work and work. We should not never ever give up also I know that this will be more harder for our children because every single day it gets harder for us to find a job and if you do not have a job it is almost impossible to live in a world like now. I can not even imagine a world for my children. The only escape from this swamp is work.

    5. Alp, thanks, to start with, for the great insight you brought into this discussion. You provided a complete analysis to it and clearly learned well from it. To beat the depression, working hard is key, I agree with you. Sometimes, though, the systems and the people are so corrupt that it is impossible to defeat depression with honesty and hard work. Nevertheless, your ideas prove how mature you are. Thanks again.

  3. The Cinderella Man is a remarkable movie which is related to The Great Depression. All Americans were affected badly in that period of time. In the movie, thousands of family suffer from hunger and poverty. People are heavily in debt and cannot pay off their debts because of the unemployment. Only nine or ten men were picked each day to work for a very little amount of money. In 1930s The Great Depression was an economic disaster in American history. Even the richest people lost their savings and almost no one had financial support. Each family was in struggle to survive.
James Braddock is an athlete and a hero who achieved great success and became an inspiration for Americans. He is also known as “Cinderella Man”.
I think James is a sympathetic character by being an ambitious boxer and a loving father. Even though he was desperate for not being able to pay the bills he was still a great father for his family. He career appeared to be finished after his failures because of his broken hand. Nevertheless, he never disappointed his family. He always had hope and tried his best to keep the family together. He also had strong relationships with his children. I adore that he is a considerate father and a husband. For instance, when the food was not enough for his daughter he gave his food and told her that he is full because he ate a thick meat and ice cream in his dream. Also when he found out that his son stole sausage from the butcher he said that they cannot stole things no matter which situation they are in. He made him promise to not do it again which shows that he raises his children with good morals. Also he pissed off when his wife sent away the children because of the bad conditions. He insistently said that she cannot make decisions about the children without asking him. After arguing with her he was forced to go on Public Relief in order to take his children back.
According to me, the most important part is when James shows great courage by returning to the ring even though there is no safety in there. Although his opponent, Max Baer, have killed two men in the ring James never hesitates to take the risk because he wants to provide well conditions to his family and afraid of disappointing them. His family is the only thing that he holds on and makes his painful career bearable.
Moreover, issues people deal with today are pretty similar to those of the Braddock family. All over the world there are poverty, hunger and unemployment. But on the contrary there are also wealthy people. Additionally, I think child labor and violence against women are the inhumane issues that were not exist back in that time in The Great Depression. The main cause of these two problems is that people are uneducated today. Because of the ignorant families, many children are working instead of getting an education in order to gain money for the needs of their houses. Unfortunately I think that these problems will be continued until the mentality of the government changes.

  4. The Cinderella Man is the perfect explanation of Great Depression. It is about a boxer named James Braddock. He is a rich boxer. When the stock market crashed, he became a poor person. He wasn’t able to pay the bills. He was making his money from boxing matches. He lost his job because of Great Depression. In Great Depression years, he was trying to work in any place because finding a job was too hard. People were unable to spend money for their pleasures. James was lost his boxer license. He lost it because people who were watching him were no more satisfied. They were lack of money and they were thinking not to watch boxing matches anymore. Boxing committee also realized that and took James’s license due to make money. To sum up, everyone was poor and riches had no enough money to spend for boxing matches. Our star James was effected from Great Depression deeper than anyone else because he started to lose matches before Great Depression and no one wanted to watch him. He wasn’t able to pay the bills so their electricity and gas were off. He was hardly surviving and they had no money to buy milk for his children. His wife was stealing wood from a fence to warm their house. I loved James Braddock. He was an honored man. Even in Great Depression, he didn’t compromise anything from his personality. He was angry because his son steals something from the bakery. That’s why I liked him. There were some awesome scenes that make us live in Great Depression years. First of them was the scene that James’s son steal bread. When he asked why you did that, son said that he was afraid to be sent to relatives because of lack of food. One of his friend was sent in near past. This scene is a perfect reflection of hardness in Great Depression. The other scene is about the man helping James to make money. He gives some money to James in order to practice for a boxing match. When James goes to the house of that man, he sees that the house is lack of furniture. James understands that he sold his furniture in order to have some money. Furthermore, before the last match, they went to a restaurant. When they decided to leave the restaurant, James pointed out the food in the table and his wife secretly put it into her bag. Last of all, before the match of James and Max Baer, James was talking with the man that helped him and his stomach grumbled. He was about to start fighting in 5 minutes and he was hungry. The man brought some food and there was no spoon so he ate the food with his mouth because he was so hungry. Today, people deal with problems similar to Braddock family. The most important of them is unemployment. In today’s world, unemployment is an increasing problem all around the world. People are hungry and jobless. But the difference between that time and today is that in that time, there was unemployment due to lack of money. However, in today, there is unemployment because of growing population of humans. Ur children will face with problems like unemployment. So they will have to work harder to live and be in a successful place in competition of life.

    7. Hüseyin, I actually loved the details from the film you provided, that time when he ate the food without the spoon.. Sometimes visuals are very powerful to tell the whole picture, aren't they? A dark future with high rates of unemployment? Well, if you ask me, there's a bigger problem which I call the WW3. I think we are in it at the moment, so I kinda agree with Fem on the fact that your fears for the future might be in vain as there might not be a piece of humanity left on earth soon.

  5. The movie “Cinderella Man” is about a boxer who’s name is James J. Braddock. The main reason of The Great Depression was the big Stock Market Crash. It effected everybody no matter what their economical situation is. The prices became cheaper and people had to earn less money than they used to earn. People ın the movie was effected just like the others. Everyone was worried for their families and for themselves. Different socio-economic classes had the same problem. So it was the common problem for everybody. James J. Braddock have faced many problems in the movie just like other people. He used to earn less and he had a family. He had to do everything for his family and actually he did. That’s why I liked J. Braddock very much. He had so many problems but he knew how he would end them. He could be an example family member for whole world. He never gived up and finally he made it. He turned himself and his family to the old times. He told me that every problem could be fixed. Actually none of us have any problem except our personal problems and expectations. We have food and money to live. If we look at the real world pronlems like hunger or poorness, we do not have any problem. He just became the best one for me. If you ask the most important part of the movie, many people would answer it as the ending or the middle parts of it where J. Braddock fights for money. But I watch lot’s and lot’s of movies and my perspective to movies has changed a lot. I could answer the question of the best part of the movie as the beginning of the movie. I could understand if a movie is good form e from it’s first ten minutes. The way the movie started made me feel good and comfortable because I was about to watch a good one. Him coming from the box match to home and hugging his children was the most important part of the movie for me. The director made us feel the movie at first ten minutes or so. Today, we stil have some problems like Braddock have faced and people are getting divorced, families are being broken according to these problems. The real problem becomes our economic situation in our lives and that’s why people get hurt. So generally I could tell you that the problems we have today are not much different from yesterday. Also our children will face the same issues like the issues have happened a century ago and happens today. I’m sorry to tell that but for me, the world will not change.

  7. The Great Depressıon was economic failure in the 1930s. It was a very serious economic depression and it affected all classes of society. Although it was a depression to all the world, America was affected most. This depression influenced more the lives of middle and lower classes. It forced workers to migrate from place to place for finding find temporary jobs. In the movie Cinderella Man, we see the heavy effects of Great Depression in James Braddock’s life. James Braddock had a successful career as a boxer but his life change when the stock market crashes and economic depression starts. This is a turning point for his life because he losses everything. However, he needs money for his family. He can’t even pay his bills, so he finds temporary job. The other characters in the movie also have a hard life because they all came from lower and middle classes. I liked James Braddock because he is determined and strong character. He didn’t give up and fight against problems he is also protective and thoughtful father to his three children. James Braddock finally gets back to boxing when his manager calls him. He is very brave and confident. For me, the most important part is when he fights Max Baer because Max Baer is the world champion and he killed two rivals on the ring. This is important because James is not scared to fight with him. When he wins the game, he earns money and more important he gets his fame back. Today, we have same problems like in the movie. There are countries with economic problems and people without jobs. I believe that this will be also problem in the future. Today we have problems of different nature like terrorism, immigrants and power conflicts between some countries. In the future the world population will be very high and some sources of energy will be consumed. Global warming may create a serious problem for the people in next generation. I think that we are not living better lives than James Braddock’s life, and next generation populations will not live better lives than us.

  8. The Great Depression effected many people in 1930s. It was an economic failure. It effected all socio economic classes which are the poor, standard and the rich people. The movie "Cinderella Man" is James J. Braddock's life who is a great boxer and a father of a daughter and two sons and a strong man who lives in the Great Depression times. Right before The Great Depression he earns lots of money such as more than 8.300 dollars and he spends his money for his children and wife. During The Great Depression, the only money he earns becomes 6.45 dollars and at that time he owes everyone and also breaks his hand and this effects his life as being boxer. They say that he can't fight again but he fights to earn money for his children. At first it is a failure for him but as the time passes he works, wins matches and earns money. Even the great boxer becomes poor in The Great Depression. His hope makes him stronger every day and he never gives up. He tries his best and he faces every hard situation and earns money even at the time that he might have to send his children but he tries to keep his family together. Only very rich people are not affected except that, everyone is trying to get a job per a day including himself but every day they choose only nine or five people. He is a great father and a great boxer who never gives up. He tries his best to save his family. From my perspective, the part when he talks about his dream and gives his only food to his daughter and goes to find a job is very important because it shows how much he cares about his family and also the part when he sees that his children are gone he worries for his family and wants money and he quickly goes to want money to take his children back. He wins a match and becomes the best in the world and again owns his fame back. In this century there are still rich and poor people but the economy is not bad as that The Great Depression times. There are still socio-economic classes but the poorness is not that much to make people starve.

  9. The Great Depression is one of the biggest economic depressions which happened in California, in 1930's. Lots of workers lost their jobs because of the Great Depression which was an awful thing for everybody in California. Cinderella Man is a great movie which is based on a true story that happened during the Great Depression era. It's about a man called James Braddock who used to earn good money by boxing in 1920's. After the Great Depression, he lost his money and became so poor that he couldn't even pay his bills. He was searching for a job to get some coins in order to be able to pay the bills. His hand was broken which made him couldn't be able to match for a long time. He was really poor and helpless just like a lot of people who lost their money and status because of the economic depression. It's obviously shown in the movie that lots of people were trying to work in some jobs for a short time to earn money and be able to buy food and keep living. Everybody had hard times during that era. As I explained, James Braddock was very affected by the Great Depression. He became unemployed, lost his whole money, his children became ill because they didn't have enough money to warm the house etc. However, he never stopped trying so hard to be in better conditions with his family. That's the reason why I really liked him and admired his effort. The most important part of the movie was during the last match; when he remembered that he had to keep fighting for his family, picked himself up and eventually won the battle. Because this part shows the importance of being ambitious and that it's worth to fight for the things which are important to you. Today's issues are mostly political but there's also economic issues which causes very big problems. Just like the Braddock family, people suffer from famine and illnesses which are caused by low economic conditions. Today's children are raised well so they know that they should work hard to achieve success and be in good conditions. Hopefully, they won't be suffering from any kind of economic issues.

  10. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929. All Americans were effected badly at that time. 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country’s banks had failed. It was a serious problem in the 1930s. Because of the unemployment people were hungry and cannot pay off their debts. Every day they were going outside to find a job with new hopes. However almost ten of them were picked and worked full day for 6 pounds. The Great Depression is the biggest economic disaster in American history. Cinderella Man is one of the movies which reverberates these times. James J. Braddock used to be the best boxer player in U.S. in that period time. Like many others in that era he lost everything in the stock market and scrimping by on the small fights he can get and on dock work. At the same time fighting injured, including with a broken hand made him less of a fighter, he lost his job and his boxer license. He didn't have enough facility to pay electric bills and heating the house. He needed to work at the port for a very little amount of money to maintain his family. “He had three beautiful, healthy, troublemaker kids and the prettiest wife every man could wish for(Cinderella Man)”. Never and ever he knuckle down, lost his hope. I like James J. Braddock. He was an honored man, father and husband who loves his family. There were some breathtaking scenes which gives us life lessons. One of them is when his son stole salami from the butcher despite they need it Jimmy did the right thing and gave it back to the butcher. After that Jimmy asked his son why did he stole. He said he stole it because he was afraid to sent relative because of inadequate facilities. Then he promised his not to send them to relatives. That’s why I think he is honored man and lovely father. He fixed the ineligible status and despite everything was clamped to his family. On the other hand this event shows the hardness of the Great Depression. It was hard for parents to earn money, nevertheless it was also hard for children to sent relatives for better conditions by leaving their parents. In the following part of the movie, he got an opportunity to earn money from his real job box. Just for one match he was able to fight and he won it. It was the turning point for him, he got enough money to pay the bills and heat the house. After that he started to work to return his old former state. He climbed success steps one by one. At the end he had match with the best boxer Max Baer. Everyone believed Jimmy, support him and at the end he won the last match. Its like a foreshadowing. After all difficulties, everything will be alright with working and hoping. Today, still here are families like Braddock family. People are dealing with hunger, poverty and unemployment all around the world. Especially for Turkey unemployment is getting bigger and bigger. Every year lots of people graduating and they are not finding jobs. Us and also our children should educate well enough for good opportunities for the future.

  11. "In all the history of the boxing game you find no human interest story to compare with the life narrative of James J. Braddock…" Cinderella Man is a tremendous movie that reflects the Great Depression period very well. James J. Baddock, who is the main character, is a boxer who’s trying to subsist his own family. As a result of the Great Depression, unemployment reached to record proportions. A lot of people suffered from poverty. They couldn’t even find something to eat properly. Most of the people had to sell their homes or their cars in order to survive. People wanted to get in every kind of job that they can do on account of earning some money to save the day. A lot of people are trying to get in a job and continue their lives in the movie as well, and Baddock’s life is an example of them. Braddock used to be a successful boxer but after he had some injuries and with the effect of Great Depression he and his family had to been through some difficulties. When his boxing career reached the end, he tried other jobs. They sometimes couldn’t pay their electricity bills and because of they are not able to feed their children properly, his wife sent them from home to make them live better. However, Baddock went to New York City to get some financial help and get his children. He asked for money from people with his pride and got the amount of money that he needed to take his kids back home. After he took his kids to home, he did his best to pay their bills and keep his children warm and fed. Why I like James J. Baddock is that he doesn’t give up. When he got a chance to start boxing again, in spite of his age, he accepted the offer with his eyes closed. He never hesitated from himself. With his own perseverance, he became everyone’s hope and faith. Through out his matches after the Great Depression, from his first match to last, he reached to success with his own determination. This movie teaches people that in every bad situation there is a way out. There are some similarities of social life between now and the Great Depression period. In the Great Depression unemployment was the biggest problem which led to many other problems. Unemployment is a huge problem even now. There are thousands of homeless people all over the world. Many of them are in that situation because they can’t find any job to work. That is why in this world of rivalry, we have to excel and be the best in every thing in order to guarantee our life in the future. However, this opinion can be controverted easily because we saw that even wealthy people were effected and most of them lost their everything so my suggestion is, live your life and go after your dreams, do what makes you feel happy because life is too short to worry about the next generations. Respects.

  12. The great depression which started in 1929 is a real big economic depression. It hurt all the social classes. The reason of this economic crisis was as it says in the film people paid a lot for stocks believing that it will continue rising, but in this time October 24, 1929 the day called Black Thursday stock markets crushed. Also the main character James J. Braddock
spent money for stocks and became poor after the crush. Because of this crush people were poor, hungry and unemployed. In the newspaper which James J. Braddock looked there was the title “fifteen million unemployed people”. People sold their home contents, they were supposed to wait lines to get bread, they had to wait in lines to get in a work and only just a small amount of people were selected. People couldn’t afford paying their bills so that their heat and electricity were closed. Some people were supposed to send their children because they couldn’t heat and feed them. James was an Irish boxer who people thought that will be a champion in the future. But after the great depressions effects on him and his injury he started to loose again and again. Afterwards the headmaster of this boxing organization thought that he wouldn’t be able to come back again after this injury and cancelled his license. He went to the working lines but in the first day he wasn’t selected. In the second day he was selected and tried to earn money for his family. Afterwards he learned that his manager arranged a new match for him. But it was because they couldn’t find anyone to fight with his enemy. I really admire James J. Braddock because whenever he faced with stronger enemies than him he remembered about his family and why should he win this fight and get moralized. I think the best part of the film was the part that after son of James stole meat from butcher and they gave it back his son told him that he was afraid that he will be sent to somewhere else because they did it to his friend, James promised him that he will not send him but I think this part summarizes the mood of people at that time. There are still places where struggles with economic problems. But today we see the most important problems are the ones which refugees struggle with. The difference between today and the 1929 economic crush is that now it is problems between countries and wars, but the old one was only about money.

  13. This is awesome. This movie represented during the 1930s perfectly in United State also İt show us economic conditions very well. The movie which is name is Cinderella Man about the boxer who affected from the great depression during 1930s. The man was very good boxer, he beat everyone easily. He was rich, healthy and had comfortable life before the great depression. With begun the great depression, he lost his prosperity and successful in the box match. He became be loser because of that he prohibited from box world. He lost everything. Car, home, money, valuable staff everything die away. He worked at harbor for cheap wage but one day his best friend came and regulated his life. He took match for him and from this match, he increasing until to be world champion. In the movie people were so poor. Man of people lost everything like James Braddock. And they struggle financial problems, cold, hungry,… I like James Braddock because he never gave up in the great depression. He worked with a broken hand at the harbor to feed and pay bills for his family. Furthermore when his best friend took a match, he fight for his family and he was rising very well. Also I want to add that his amazing wife had a big role to he never gave up. He always stay calm for their children and his husband, he never cry foul too. He always supported his husband. James Braddock was really lucky to had a wife such as angel. I think, most important part of the movie was when his friend came and call him and took him again in the ring for only a match. Because everything changed after this match. He was rising. He made money. He feed his children better than past also himself too. But most important thing, he gave hope to folk. He was like a light in the dark for them. People believed him. They thought that, salvation is close because they saw everything could be in life with James Braddock. Today, still we see same problems from many of the country. People are hungry, economic conditions are bad. People living in bad conditions. Also population increased each passing day with unemployment increases. Our children probably will see worst than us. They must work hard if they don’t want to affected from the issues.

  14. “Sure, business is bunk, And Wall Street is sunk, we're all of us broke, and ready to croak. We've nothing to dunk, Can't even get drunk, and all the while, they tell us to smile.” This quote by Eddie Cantor, simply explains the life and mental condition of the Western industrialized world’s people on the late 20s through the late 30’s. “Cinderella Man” by Ron Howard, addresses the life conditions during the great depression after the crash. The movie is about a boxer who used to be an undisputed boxer called James Braddock. After the crash he could not earn enough money from boxing in order to feed both himself and his family, and begun to lose the fights. His career appeared to be finished; he was unable to pay the bills. The Great Depression was the deepest and the longest lasting economic slump in the history of Western industrialized world. The depression began soon after the stock market crash. It affected everybody in different socio-economic classes in a different degree. For instance, after the couple of defeats of James, the businessman who pays James and organizes the fights and the bets started to lose money because of his fights. Due to that, the businessman canceled his license in boxing. James was one of the people who were spending their life savings and buying stocks. The crash hit him very hard. When James got unemployed and became unable to support his family so he became one of the 600.000 people in New Jersey who are unemployed. This number continued to rise. James a.k.a Cinderella Man, did his best in order to support and feed his family. His faith helped him to survive from the Great Depression. He had to find work on the docks, where five or nine men would be picked for the whole day. Some days he got the job some days he couldn’t. However, the wages were really low and not enough for him to feed his family and pay the bills. In addition to that, his wife Mia sent the children to her uncle in order them to keep cozy, safe and warm. So, he went to the Joe’s office and begged some money to pay his bills and get his children back. I like to confess that, while I was watching the movie, my eyes swelled with a couple of tears some parts. In my opinion, the scene when he went to Joe’s office and asked for some money was the most important and best. It reflected the swift change of James’ from an undisputed boxer to a poor man and the devotion of a father to his family. His determination and faith towards life affected and inspired me deeply. I liked both the movie and James so much. Still, today half of the people in the world are still dealing with similar issues to Braddock’s family, starvation and shelter. Over 3 billion people live on less than 2.50 dollars a day. Less than one percent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000. The modernization and globalization leaded the governments to show of strength by spending more money on armament. In addition to that, natural water sources’ numbers are decreasing hour by hour. In my opinion, in the future our children will face the lack of drinkable water.

  15. In the movie people were affected very severely in a way that their economic stability was crushed. People were waiting at bread lines and men who had to work were going to docks for jobs to feed their children. However even that was not enough to maintain a stable economy because people going to docks for works was not employed there, people were picked differently every day. The poor people got poorer but rich men was not affected that much and the term "middle class" no longer existed in the era of great depression because people who were middle class also became poor and sold everything they got just like James J. Braddock and his family.
Throughout the movie James Braddock most importantly faces poverty and overall the struggles that the Great Depression brought to everyone such as unemployment and etc. However at the end James Braddock overcomes these challenges and shows everyone that he has some determination in himself. Therefore I Iiked him because James Braddock was able to give hope and inpire people, also he won many's respect, that is a winner in my book.
I think that the most important part of the movie was the part where he beats his first opponent when he returns to boxing. The part is important because the motivation of wininng gave James Braddock a boost to keep on boxing. In the end he beat the world champion and became one. So that decision of returning to boxing made him the world champion and also helped him get through his tough times.
Nowadays there are people still fighting with poverty and hunger. Humanity was not able to fix this problem for centruies. The greed, inhumane acts, and political issues made this world a mess. We are not moving forward, instead we are falling back every year. We as the humanity has the power to erdicate these problems from the earth. However, people are not thinking in long term solutions. For their own benefits they kill, torture, and make people's lives harder and harder. Is this what we want to leave our children? Personally, I think that if humanity goes on like this poverty, hunger, greed, selfish creatures will rotten our world and great minds of our children and their children. The only difference between yesterday and today, is that these problems are getting bigger and bigger.

  16. Cinderella Man… What a movie that was. I want to thank Ms. D for picking such a movie for us to watch, which both includes the Great Depression times and essential values in a real man’s life. First of all, I want to indicate that the movie was a breathtaking one and moreover it was a really touching and inspirational story. Actually, which made this film a touching and an inspirational one is the time period of the story. The movie started just before the Great Depression took control of people in America, and it helped us, the audience, to feel and understand the Great Depression times better. The main character of the movie, James J. Braddock, was an unbeatable boxer just before the Great Depression. He had a record of 21-0. He was also very rich and he was getting nearly four thousand dollars for every match he won. But Great Depression hit Braddock, like the majority of other people living in America. Generally, people who were affected by the Great Depression were selling everything they had, living on the streets or in tents, starving to death, unable to find a job, commiting suicide because of failures and sending away their children to protect them. But there were also some classes of people who weren’t affected so much and they were generally bosses and employers. But James J. Braddock was one of the people who were affected so badly. Braddock started to lose matches in a row, he lost his job, boxing federation cancelled his licence, he was struggling to find a job, he lost all of his wealth, but above all, he was really struggling to take care of his wife and his three children. I liked James J. Braddock and I found out that he is an unquestionably adorable person. It is because that he did everything he could do to protect and take care of his family, he even risked his own life for it. I think there were two crucial points in the movie. First one is Braddock’s win against Griffin, which was his first step to the championship, and the second one was where he dodged Baer’s death shot in the final match, which was very important for the win and not to upset his wife Mae. Lastly, I want to write about some similar issues people living now, and will be living in the future. Even though, there is not an economic turndown, like the Great Depression, happening today, there are people who are struggling from the similar issues which Braddock family struggled with. There are still many people who are unemployed, with no money, living on the streets and can’t help their family. The issues of that period and today is similar in many ways but, with the development of economies and technology more job opportunities occured, so unemployment rate is way lower than the Great Depression times, at least. Also, the governments generally, are more able to help their citizens. To conclude, I think our children will also face issues similar to these. It seems like it is nearly impossible to end them. Beside those, it can get worse, and new world wars and more terror can occur with the increase of rapacity in leaders, day by day.

  17. In the movie named ‘Cinderella Man’ which tells us about a boxer named James J. Braddock who was rich before great depression.Depression made people so poor that they steal wood from a bilboard to burn. People start to wait every morning in front of a factory to get a job and get money. Depression made people to send their child away because they dont have money to feed them. Rich ones were lucky because they didint live depression too harshly like others .Mr.Braddock tried to box again so that he can buy food for his family but in his first mach he broked his arm because he was fighting with an injured hand so that they took away his license.Only way for him to get a job is in front of factories luckly he got a job but he was so slow because of his broken arm so he learned to use his left arm.He caught his son stealing because of afraidness of sending away .After seeing that he promised to his child that he would never send him away.He got some cahances to box again at the professional leauge so he get to finals by wining lots of maches . I liked Mr.Braddock because he is a caring man that can do everthing for his family. The most important part of the story was Mr.Braddock being a moral model to poor people because he is a hardworker and he got to proffesional leauge from zero .People sampled him as a rolemodel of working hard.Today poor people uses other electricity because that they cant afford paying tax. They got to streets and start to beg for money like Mr.Braddock when he wents to big city and ask his old friends for money. Our children may face a world with lots of netural diffuculties because nowadays humans uses lots of natural sources that world starts to harm we are lucky that we are living in a good condutions. Nuclear usage will increase so nature will be harmed so our child may get diffuculties to find netural sources which means they had to use artificial sources which is bad.

  18. During The Great Depression era many people has lost all their money and belongings due to the collapse of the economy. The unemployment rates were higher than it ever was and a big percent of the country did not have any jobs. In the movie Cinderella Man, James J Braddock loses his job as a boxer due to an injury and he tries working in normal jobs but the truth is that there are none. He struggles to find any work that would pay, he can not bring food to home and pay the bills which ends up with the cutting of the heat, leaving them cold. Even though there were poor people, the rich still remained existing during the era, as shown in the movie; people in fancy dresses and in fancy restaurants having dinner while poor people are dying outside.
While watching the movie I thought I did not like James Braddock but as the story kept on, I realized that I was envious. That man lost everything he had yet he was stone firm about not sending his children away. I thought he should’ve done it but he insisted, worked, begged and got his children back. The reason I was jealous is that I do not have the ambition James Braddock has. He did everything possible to keep his family well, he worked with a broken hand, he asked for money from the government and his old friends. He only cared about his family and was ready to do whatever it took him to take care of his family.
One scene that caught my interest in the movie was when Mae was praying and Jimmy said something along the lines of “I did all my prayers” that sentence struck me. Religion is such an important thing in people’s life and the fact that he said that showed one thing; he has lost all of his hope. But no. James Braddock was ambitious and determined and he pulled his life back.
Today and The Great Depression era might seem very different, and in fact it is but some things never change. Today’s unemployment rates are still very high and depressing. People can not find jobs even though they graduate from college. There are many homeless people out there still. Homeless people who die because of cold and hunger. These problems will not go away and some new ones will add up to them. Our children will face many different problems than we do now; I believe they will have major problems due to the technology craziness.
Overall, the movie Cinderella Man was a great representation of The Great Depression era as it showed the struggles of people with an interesting plotline. I enjoyed watching it.

  19. The Great Depression is an era that had many effects on people in 1930s. There are many books and films based on The Great Depression and it is really important because it affects the whole world and people’s life. One of the movies that is based on this background is “Cinderella Man”. It was a great movie that deals with the social change in the United Sates. It displays a story about the boxer James J. Braddock who has three children and is married with Mae. The movie gives us the big picture of The Great Depression background and how the people were affected. There are no much differences between rich and poor because they both had struggle to survive. Even most rich man lost everything they got and became really poor like James. Additionally, the people were standing in line for free food. When his daughter is eating salami, he figures out that his daughter is still hungry and she wants more milk, but they haven’t more milk to give her because her siblings haven’t drunk the milk yet. So he gives his salami to her. Accordingly, while he was giving an interview, he said that he owed his success to know what he is fighting for-“milk”. Furthermore, people are homeless and living on the streets, in cars because they can’t pay the bills. Therefore, he cannot afford to pay the heat and electricity bills and his children became sick. That’s why they had to farm out their kids even though he promised to Jay that he will never send him out and he is so upset. Correspondingly he went job that anything he could but they don’t picked him every day. They only pick five to ten people per day with a little amount of money. Also, he went on public assistance to get relief money which is 19 dollars and it isn’t enough for bringing his children back to home. So he went to the place where he was pink-slipped and he begged for money and he sold everything he got. I like him so much and he is a symbol that Americans can overcome hard times with belief. He had many problems to overcome, but he never gave up and he faced struggles throughout the movie. Also, he is a loving husband and courageous family man and today it is hard to find someone like him. He always tried to keep his family safe and together. In addition he is honest, when his child, Jay stole the food from the butcher; he gave the food back and apologized. He also told to his son that they never steal although they are poor and don’t have enough food. I think the most important part is when he went to the place that is full with wealthy men, he begged for money. Although, they disconnect him to the ring, he showed a great courage that nobody can have in our time because their ego won’t let them to do it. Additionally, I think this event, perfectly expressed the hard times that people had to face and the differences between our daily life and the Great Depression. Also, this event shows that nothing is more important than a family. Together with, today also people deal with hunger and unemployment. Also, there are still homeless people all around the world. Around the Great Depression era people need to deal with unemployment because of lack of money due to the bank collapsed. But today’s reason is the increasing number of people that have a college degree. Finally, I think that our children need to work harder to be successful and they need to have the best education they can get. For not doing the same mistake in the future, they need to take a lesson from the past.

  20. What else could explain the difficulties of a despairing period better than powerful movie based on a real life story? Cinderella Man explains a lot about the lives of people in the Great Depression period in an effective way. It is possible to see the clear change in people’s lives before and during the Great Depression time. The big market-crush which had started the Depression effected people differently based on the financial stiuations and amount of money people have in banks, it also means the job people had is one of the criterions. As a result, The socio-economic classes had been upside down. People lost their jobs, and as we see in the movie only very few number of people find job from all the citiziens and work for really less amount of money.
Our main character, the Cinderella man, James J. Braddock faced with many desperate situations throughout the movie, yet he didn’t lose his hope ever for once. He lost his everything after the crush, he had no job, his left hand was broken and had no money to heat his family. His children became really ill because of the cold, but he didn’t give up in any kind of obstacle he had face. There were big changes happening in his life really often, and his repetition changed. However, he had never lose his title as a determined man and a great father. This stability is what I liked the most about his character. In the movie, the part which he wants money from his old workmates is effected me so much. The action of taking the chance of being humiliated requires a strong charectirization and so much bravery. As an individual his decisions to protect his familty as this example was remarkable for me.
As we din’t know before we wouldn’t know the things might happen in the financial issues today. We don’t have the same problems with those times, yet as I see there might be another problems coming in the next years. The number of educated people are getting higher in our country, yet the education system is not well enough, and as a result I believe this may effect people when finding jobs in a bad way.
